Why Accurate TMJ Diagnosis Matters

Unfortunately, this diversity of TMJ conditions can make it hard for people to get a proper diagnosis and treatment. Misdiagnosis, partial diagnosis, and ineffective treatments can cause people to suffer with TMJ symptoms for years without relief. At Westchester TMJ & Sleep, TMJ dentist Dr. Wanda Mejia can utilize our advanced technology, her extensive training, and her nearly 30 years of experience to help you get an accurate diagnosis to serve as a basis for effective treatment.

Types of TMJ

As we mentioned above, a “TMJ disorder” is something of an umbrella term. There are many different types of the condition, although nobody knows exactly how many there are. Currently, most experts agree on at least these three that are well-defined and described.

It’s possible to have all three types of TMJ as well as other types that haven’t been described yet.

  • MPD (Myofascial Pain Disorder): Caused by overworked jaw muscles leading to pain and ear-related symptoms.
  • DD (Disc Displacement): Occurs when the cushioning disc slips out of place, causing popping, clicking, and restricted jaw movement that may lead to a locked jaw.
  • DJD (Degenerative Joint Disease): Results from arthritis (commonly osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis), leading to joint breakdown, pain, and limited jaw function.

Signs and Symptoms of TMJ Disorder

With so many different types of TMJ, it shouldn’t be a surprise that there are also many signs and symptoms of TMJ. This has led some people to describe TMJ as a “great imposter” because its symptoms masquerade as other conditions.

Here are some of the signs and symptoms people report related to their TMJ:

  • Bite misalignment or a feeling that teeth don’t fit together properly
  • Worn, chipped, or cracked teeth from clenching or grinding
  • Ear pain, fullness, or ringing (tinnitus)
  • Chronic headaches or migraines
  • Pain extending to the face, neck, shoulders, or back
  • Jaw pain and soreness
  • Clicking, popping, or grinding sounds in the jaw
  • Difficulty opening or closing the mouth fully

TMJ Diagnosis

TMJ diagnosis requires careful evaluation and advanced technology. Dr. Mejia begins by discussing your medical history and symptoms, then examines your jaw joints and muscles to identify areas of tenderness. She may use tools like T-Scan and electromyography to measure bite force and muscle tension, followed by gentle TENS therapy to relax your jaw for accurate readings. In some cases, CBCT imaging provides detailed 3D views of your jaw joints with minimal radiation. Using this precise information, Dr. Mejia can accurately diagnose your condition and design a personalized treatment plan to restore comfort and balance to your bite.

TMJ Treatment

Exercises and stretches can often relieve mild TMJ symptoms, especially MPD. Muscle relaxants or TENS therapy may also help. For MPD and DD, a bite splint can align the jaw and reduce strain. Once improvement is achieved, dental restorations can help maintain alignment and repair damage.

TMJ surgery, once common, is now a last resort due to complications. Today, Westchester County TMJ dentist Dr. Mejia focuses on effective, nonsurgical treatments such as:

  • Exercises and stretches
  • Muscle relaxants
  • TENS
  • Bite splints (orthotics)
  • Dental restorations
