One of the most rewarding aspects of treating TMJ disorders is seeing patients’ lives change for the better. Dr. Wanda Mejia and her team meet people every week who are suffering from the many painful symptoms of TMJ. Being able to change lives with highly effective TMJ treatment is very exciting and rewarding. Let’s read about Donna, a TMJ patient who was willing to share her experience with others who may need Dr. Mejia’s help.
Meet Donna
One of our most recent success stories involves a woman named Donna who came to Dr. Mejia experiencing headaches, jaw pain, difficulty opening her mouth, dizziness, ringing in the ears, face and neck pain, and clenching/grinding of her teeth (known as bruxism). These symptoms made life difficult and caused constant pain and limited ability to participate in activities of daily living.
She sought help from medical professionals and tried many remedies at home to alleviate her symptoms. Donna had been taking anti-inflammatories (NSAIDs) and muscle relaxants daily for a long time to no avail. Instead of these short-term “solutions” that rarely worked, Donna was looking for a permanent solution to a debilitating problem that was affecting all areas of her life. She found Dr. Wanda Mejia, and everything changed.
Life-Changing Treatment
After TMJ dentist Dr. Mejia conducted a comprehensive evaluation using the most advanced TMJ technology available today, Donna immediately began Phase I treatment and then advanced on to Phase II treatment when Dr. Mejia felt she was ready.
You can learn more about each phase of TMJ treatment by clicking on the links below, and while each patient’s treatment plan is custom designed for their particular needs, the phases of TMJ treatment are similar for most patients.
During your TMJ treatment, you may be fitted for an oral appliance, you may undergo TENS sessions, and you may require dental restorations to correct the problems that are causing your malocclusion (misaligned bite). Let’s take a look at the two phases of TMJ treatment.
Phase I
Phase I TMJ treatment lays the foundation of your treatment plan and resets your jaw and bite into proper alignment. The first phase typically lasts several months, and you will typically start with two mouth splints (oral appliances).
Phase I TMJ treatment usually consists of four parts:
- One week with the first splint
- One week with a second splint
- Approximately four months with 1st orthotic
- Approximately four months with 2nd orthotic
Phase II
Phase II TMJ treatment involves repositioning the jaw. It could require neuromuscular orthodontics, dental implants, dental bridges, porcelain veneers, and any other restorative dentistry procedures necessary to end the painful symptoms of TMJ.
A thorough neuromuscular workup with Dr. Mejia and her team ensures the right treatment plan is created for you, and you will likely experience relief in no time at all.
Thanks to the training, education, and technology available at Westchester TMJ & Aesthetics serving Westchester County, NY, Donna and patients with similar symptoms no longer have to suffer the painful symptoms of TMJ.
As Donna said, “Dr. Mejia gave me relief when no one else could. I feel like me again; I feel like the old Donna.” She no longer has to depend on medications to get through the day, and she can enjoy a better quality of life she never thought she’d have. Reviews of TMJ dentists are very helpful, but reading one patient’s specific story lets you know your life can change, too, when you see a TMJ dentist who listens to your history and finds the best treatment plan for you.
